On Tuesday, July 21, at 12:00 PM, at the "Sukat Shalom" synagogue, Maršala Birjuzova 19, the birthday gathering of the Golden Heart will take place.
We invite you to join us in a warm and pleasant atmosphere of friendship, community, and joy, where we will celebrate the birthdays of our honorees and spend quality time with friends and members of our community.
At the gathering, we will also present the documentary film "Wonders of Humanity – Episode 15: Tunisia: El Ghriba Synagogue" (2018).
Directed by: Celia Lowenstein and Lysiane Le Mercier
On the island of Djerba, located off the coast of Tunisia, around 150,000 Muslims and approximately a thousand Jews live. This island represents one of the last remaining Jewish communities in the Arab world.
If you stroll through the countless alleys and narrow passages of Djerba, you will see signs in Hebrew indicating the workshops of goldsmiths. Internationally recognized jewelers, such as Youssef Gamoun, still nurture this centuries-old tradition.
The El Ghriba synagogue is undoubtedly one of the most significant and visited synagogues in Africa. It is often referred to as the "forecourt of Jerusalem" because it is believed to house the remnants of Solomon's temple. It is also the site of an annual pilgrimage during the Jewish holiday Lag BaOmer. Thanks to one of the pilgrims, Ruth Davis, an English ethnomusicologist, we learn about numerous rituals performed in the synagogue, mostly conducted by women praying for health and fertility.
After the film screening, we will socialize and celebrate the birthdays of our honorees as it should be – with cake, great company, gifts, friends, and wonderful music.
Our kosher kitchen has also prepared a festive buffet for all attendees.
