Jewish culture encompasses many aspects, including religion and worldviews, tradition, literature, visual arts, media, cinematography, music and dance, art and architecture, attitudes towards marriage and family, social customs, and lifestyle. Some elements of Jewish culture stem from Judaism, others from the interaction of Jews with the local population, while some have arisen from the internal social and cultural dynamics of the community. Before the 18th century, religion dominated almost all aspects of Jewish life, and thus cultural creation. With the emergence of secularization, Jewish culture began to develop through elements of the social and communal life of the Jewish people, both in the diaspora and in the modern State of Israel.

According to available written documents, Jews are mentioned in Belgrade as early as 950 AD, while many traces indicate their presence since 450 AD. The Jewish community in Belgrade has existed since 1521.

One of the important goals of the Jewish community in Belgrade is to promote and nurture Jewish culture, which represents an integral part of the cultural heritage of Belgrade and Serbia. Through activities of the cultural-educational program, the Jewish Community of Belgrade contributes to the affirmation of mutual respect and understanding of different cultures and religious communities in these areas, as significant values of modern society. Throughout centuries of existence in these regions, the Jewish community has made a significant contribution to the cultural life and creativity of society. Many writers, generals, politicians, artists, and other prominent members of society were Jews.

The culture and education program of the Jewish Municipality of Belgrade consists of several segments: marking Jewish holidays, preserving and affirming cultural heritage through lectures, exhibitions, and folklore, promoting books, concerts of Jewish and other music, performances of the amateur theater “King David,” presenting Jewish literature, and informal education for youth. An important part of Jewish culture is also the commemoration of significant dates throughout history, as well as preserving the memory and educating young people about the Holocaust.

The implementation of the program takes place through the activities of sections of the Jewish Municipality of Belgrade: the Serbian-Jewish Singing Society “Brothers Baruh,” the Women’s Section, the Center for Informal Education (youth, student, and children’s programs), the Hebrew language section, and the amateur theater “King David.”
